Koko · Legal
Terms of Use
Effective: August 11, 2026
These terms govern your use of the Koko iOS app and hellokoko.app. By using Koko, you agree to them.
1. The service
Koko provides lessons, reading practice, vocabulary review, progress tools, guided practice chat, and object-to-word scanning for Amharic and Afaan Oromo learners. Koko is free at launch. We may add, change, suspend, or remove features as the product develops.
2. Who may use Koko
You must be able to enter a binding agreement where you live. If you are under the age required to consent on your own, a parent or legal guardian must review and accept these terms for you. Koko is not offered as a Kids Category app.
3. Your license
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Koko for lawful, non-commercial language-learning purposes. You may not copy, sell, reverse engineer, scrape, interfere with, or misuse Koko except where applicable law expressly allows it.
If you download Koko through Apple, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. If these terms conflict with mandatory App Store terms, the mandatory App Store terms control.
4. Your content and feedback
You keep your rights in text, photos, and feedback you submit. You give us permission to process that content only as needed to provide, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the feature you chose. Do not submit content you do not have permission to use, highly sensitive personal information, or unlawful or harmful material.
5. AI-assisted features
Practice Chat and Word Scan use automated systems. When you submit text in Practice Chat or choose an object image in Word Scan, you instruct Koko to send that content to our service providers to moderate and provide the feature. You can use lessons, audio, progress, reading, and review without using these tools. AI output can be incomplete or wrong. Verify important translations and do not rely on Koko for legal, medical, financial, safety-critical, or other professional advice.
We may moderate inputs and outputs, limit usage, and decline requests to protect learners, the service, and third parties.
Word Scan may transmit both a bounded subject image and a smaller context image to identify the selected object. Koko prefers its human-reviewed vocabulary collection. If that collection does not contain a recognized everyday concept, Word Scan may return a clearly labeled AI translation instead. AI translations are not human-verified and may be wrong. You can flag the object, word, or language style from the result; reported scans are refunded and may be removed from the shared translation cache. Unsupported results may still be declined without charge.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Koko to violate law or another person’s rights.
- Upload abusive, exploitative, deceptive, or malicious content.
- Probe, disrupt, overload, or bypass security or usage limits.
- Use automated means to extract curriculum, media, or service data.
- Present automated output as authoritative when verification matters.
7. Intellectual property
Koko’s software, design, curriculum structure, original illustrations, branding, and other original materials are owned by or licensed to Koko and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. Third-party marks and materials remain the property of their owners.
8. Third-party services
Koko relies on service providers for app distribution, hosting, authentication, database functions, AI processing, anonymous product analytics, and privacy-filtered crash and performance diagnostics. Their terms may apply when you use their services. Our Privacy Policy explains the information involved.
9. Optional tips and App Store purchases
The Koko iOS app may offer optional, one-time tips through Apple’s In-App Purchase system. Tips help support Koko’s operating costs and future development, but they do not unlock content, features, or services. Koko remains free to use whether or not you tip.
Apple displays the price and asks you to confirm before charging the payment method associated with your Apple Account. Tips are consumable purchases and do not need to be restored. Apple handles billing and refund requests under its applicable terms and policies.
10. Availability and changes
We aim to keep Koko useful and available, but we do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation. We may update the app, curriculum, usage limits, or these terms. Material changes will be reflected by a new effective date and, when appropriate, an in-app notice.
11. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Koko is provided “as is” and “as available.” We disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and accuracy. Nothing in these terms limits rights that cannot lawfully be waived.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Koko and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits, or opportunities arising from your use of the service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Koko during the previous 12 months or USD $50.
13. Ending use
You may stop using Koko at any time. The iOS app provides Delete Account & All Data in Settings to remove local learning data and Koko’s unlinked online-service identity and associated server records. We may restrict access when reasonably necessary to address misuse, security risk, legal obligations, or service integrity. Sections that by their nature should survive will remain in effect.
